Join Friends of the Bloomingdale Trail to celebrate the mighty (and fleeting!) Serviceberry with two special summer treats ("Bloomingdale Ice" and "Bloomingdale Beer"), available for ONE DAY ONLY -- August 20th.
We'll begin at Ava’s Italian Ice (1814 N. Western) from 11:00 am - 9:00 pm with a special Serviceberry "Bloomingdale Ice". We'll close out the evening from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm at Bungalow by Middle Brow (2840 W. Armitage Av.) with the debut of "Bloomingdale Beer". All proceeds from sales of Serviceberry Ice and Beer go to support Friends of the Bloomingdale Trail, the community stewards of the Bloomingdale Trail.
Serviceberries (aka Juneberries, or sarvisberries, or saskatoons) are plentiful up on the Bloomingdale Trail and throughout Chicago. The small, deciduous, shrublike trees produce white flowers in spring before fruiting with red to dark purple (the ripest) berries for a few short weeks in early summer. Tasting like a mild blueberry, the berries are slightly nutty and sweet, and make excellent jam and pies — as well as Italian ice! Join us to celebrate this seasonal fruit, in the Bloomingdale Trail tradition of making something wonderful out of something overlooked and taken for granted.
